How Solar Panels Can Save You Money
In the future solar energy will be the main source our consumable energy. It is an energy source that will last another 4 billion years according to experts and is completely clean, meaning that it has no negative impact on the environment. Homeowner’s will consider this energy source seriously once they realize the cost of energy is reduced to zero after the initial installation and setup costs are incurred making it a viable source of heat and energy needs for an average household.
The solar panel itself is essentially a container that holds solar cells. The energy that solar cells produce from sunlight is electricity. The process itself involves photons hitting electrons in the silicone material on the solar cells, which become electricity. Only a half of a volt of power per cell is generated from sunlight necessitating the use of many solar panels to provide electricity. You can actually make your own solar panel at home and it doesn’t really cost much, especially since then you will be able to enjoy the benefits of free electricity. If you are good at do-it-yourself projects, more than likely you will be able to create and soldered together your very own solar panels.
Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. Wood will expand and shrink with the changes in the weather. Solar cells can be damaged if the wood shifts, that is why you need to use a dot of caulk. Once the caulk has set, all you need to do is to drill a hole in the box for the wires but make sure to fill it with caulk after you have pushed the wires through to make sure that no moisture gets in. The plexiglass will have to be screwed on and mounted where you want it.
Batteries will need to be connected and you may want to solder a diode first. This way, power will only be able to flow from the solar cells to the batteries and not the other way around. The latter would mean a waste of power and it can happen during the night. This step may not be necessary if you choose to use a charge controller.
It only takes some skills with tools and anyone can build a solar panel. With your solar panel up and running you could be powering your own home with sunlight.
