Building Your Own Solar Panel Is Easier Than You Think
Energy from the limitless resource of the sun is the primary focus of those that develop solar energy products. This energy supply is really limitless and will continue on for many lifetimes. Clean energy, as solar energy is referred to, is relatively cheap to invest into because of the rebates and incentives that are offered. You should be wondering by now how these solar panels work? By the end of this article, you will understand.
It is not that difficult to build your own solar panels. Of course, you do need to have some DIY skills, in that you need to be handy with a soldering iron and to be able to handle a saw, but other than that you can have a solar panel ready in no time at all. To build your own solar panels you will need just a few basic items. You will have to use caulk to attach your solar cells to your wooden container. To make your life easier when you are doing the wiring you need to try and find solar panels that already have the tabs on them. Make sure that you get solar panels with tabs, otherwise you will have to solder on tabs before you glue them in place. Since you will need solar cells mounted together to create your homemade solar panel it’s important to have them on hand as well. Ebay is a good place to look for inexpensive cells against popular belief that they might be difficult to locate. You still need to be aware of what you are buying and don’t buy them just because you find them for less money. You still need a quality cell group that’s not damaged in order to maximize your energy output. Therefore, you want to avoid any solar cells that are “grade B” or lower. 100 solar cells can produce an average o9f 100 watts of power, you’ll find approximately 36 of these in each solar panel. Don’t worry, though, because a solar cell is only about $2 a piece, so they won’t cost you a fortune.
Since solar panels are essentially a set of solar cells within a container, you will need to make a container if you are taking the DIY route with your solar panels. Solar panels containers can be made of any number of materials although the ease of workmanship makes wood the obvious choice for such a project. You can use whatever wood type suits your fancy but we can recommend the usage of plywood. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. This type of opaque covering protects the cells from damage due to the elements while still allowing necessary sunlight to reach each cell. You’ll need to have a hole in the box that will make it possible for you to get the wires pulled outside the box too. You can use solder to connect all of these cells together once you’ve mounted the solar cells. Do it yourself skills are necessary as with any project but overall this is a simple task to tackle for many of us. If you are serious about saving money, this is a project easy enough for even the novice to complete once the materials are rounded up and the patience to succeed is wrangled into production.
