The Upside of Using Solar Panels
Solar energy is undoubtedly the future. It is an energy source that will last another 4 billion years according to experts and is completely clean, meaning that it has no negative impact on the environment. Additionally, the fact that it’s free, except for installation costs is another factor that will probably see many homeowners switching over to this form of energy source.
Building your own solar panels at home isn’t as difficult as many people think. You should know how to use a soldering iron and handle a saw, if you can do this your solar panels will be ready in no time. Basically, you will need solar cells, which can be found online, wood to build the container, Plexiglas for the cover and some equipment. You’ll also need some caulk to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. Pre-tabbed solar cells will make the wiring easier. If you can not find solar panels with tabs you will have to solder on the tabs before you glue them in place. You need to be able to hook up your solar panel, once it is finished, to a 12 V battery to store the energy. A plain old lead acid battery, which is very affordable, is what you’ll need. Many places will offer great deals on these types of batteries along with coupons at your local store. Once the battery has stored enough electricity, you can use the energy by hooking up a power inverter to convert it to AC. There are two types of power inverters available, namely true sine wave and modified sine wave. To get 60 MHz electricity, like out of your outlet, you must purchase or have a true sine wave inverter. It is a little more expensive than the modified sine wave, but it’s worth paying a little extra in the long run.
It’s not hard to build solar panels yourself, as you could get all the materials you need at local stores or online. When building solar panels, you have to start with solar cells that are powerful enough for your needs. The more powerful they are, the more energy you’ll get out of them.
It takes about 80 solar cells to generate 100 watts of electricity, so you have to consider this ratio when figuring out your needs. The size of your solar panels and how many of them you’ll need will depend on how much power you want to get out of them.
As you can see, building a solar panel requires a bit of skill with tools but it is something anyone can do. It will not take that long to get your solar panel up and running and powering you entire home with sunlight.
