Understanding How Solar Panels Work
Solar energy is the future of energy as we know it. Where energy is concerned this “green energy” known as solar energy will likely outlive many other energy sources according to experts and it’s ability to avoid negative impact on the environment makes it that much more appealing to those of us who are environmentally conscious. Another factor to consider is the fact that, aside from initial setup and installation, solar energy is free which will hold some appeal to homeowners.
Mounting a solar panel on top of your home allows you to receive solar energy that can be used for many purposes, such as lighting and heating your home and giving you hot water. Your utility bills can be reduced or even eliminated by doing this.
While there is a cost involved to actually install solar panels, this can be offset by rebates or tax breaks that are available in many places. As this technology becomes more sophisticated, and more people are taking advantage of it, the costs are steadily declining. One of the best things about solar panels is that you can make them even more economical by installing them yourself, which will then free you from being dependent on the power companies.
The plexiglass is for protection of your cells. Glue is used to attach the cells to the box, and you will need to glue some wood strips inside the box. Wood will expand and shrink with the changes in the weather. Using a single dot of caulk will allow the wood to shift without damaging your solar cells. Once the caulk has set, all you need to do is to drill a hole in the box for the wires but make sure to fill it with caulk after you have pushed the wires through to make sure that no moisture gets in. Decide where you want to put your plexiglass and then screw it all together.
In terms of connections, if you are going to be connecting your solar panel to batteries, you might want to solder on a diode first. Charge your batteries using your solar panels. Lastly make sure that you are not wasting power. This step may not be necessary if you choose to use a charge controller. Conventional installation of solar panels requires positioning them on top of your living quarters, and using that electricity for your appliances and other needs. You can also heat your home using the electricity from the solar panels which can save you money every winter.
