Install Solar Panels to Cut Costs
The future of solar energy is certain to be long and adventurous. Solar energy is “green” meaning it leaves no negative impact on the environment not to mention it is likely to be around for a couple billion more years, or so the experts say. Another factor to consider is the fact that, aside from initial setup and installation, solar energy is free which will hold some appeal to homeowners.
Building your own solar panels at home isn’t as difficult as many people think. Of course, you do need to have some DIY skills, in that you need to be handy with a soldering iron and to be able to handle a saw, but other than that you can have a solar panel ready in no time at all. You will need some equipment as well as solar panels, wood for the container and plexiglass for the cover. You will have to use caulk to attach your solar cells to your wooden container. When buying solar cells, try to find ones that already have tabs as it will make your life easier when you are doing the wiring. Before you glue your solar panels in place you will have to solder tab on, if you are unable to find panels that have the tabs on them.
Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. You should only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell. To avoid damaging your solar cell consider using a single dot of silicone caulk to keep the wood free of encumbrances. Drill a hole in the box to feed your wires through, but make sure that you fill it with caulk when you are done to prevent moisture from getting to your solar cells. Lastly, screw your plexiglass on.
If you are doing all of this yourself, it’s important to remember that a solar panel is essentially a set of solar cells grouped within a container, which you will need to create for your solar panels. Solar panels containers can be made of any number of materials although the ease of workmanship makes wood the obvious choice for such a project. Your local hardware and lumber store can direct you to many types of woods available although the final choice is yours Cover the container with plexiglass, you may also want to put a bit of wood inside the box to hold the cells in place. This way sunlight can reach the cells but they will be protected from the elements. You’ll need to have a hole in the box that will make it possible for you to get the wires pulled outside the box too. It is then necessary to connect the cells to one another via soldering. Although it does require a small amount of do it yourself know how, building your own solar panel really isn’t that hard after all. You just need a bit of patience and make sure you have all the materials you need before you start.
