Understanding How Solar Panels Work
More and more people are turning to solar energy in an effort to cut costs, especially with the current state of the global economy. Installing solar panels will be high, but the expense will quickly be off set by the amount you will be saving on your electric bill. It will cost you about half the price to build your own solar panels. Use this article as a guide to building your own solar panels.
A major worry for many households is the cost of the solar panels which can and probably has dissuaded many from making the switch. All you need is some basic tools, an imagination, and the internet to create your own less expensive version of solar panels to achieve the same effect. Perhaps one of the easiest solar panel designs to create is done with a wood container, a saw, a drill and a screwdriver. Don’t overlook the likelihood of needing wood glue or other adhesives such as silicone caulk available to aide in box assembly and solar panel attachment. You need to be able to hook up your solar panel, once it is finished, to a 12 V battery to store the energy. A plain old lead acid battery, which is very affordable, is what you’ll need. Some institutions provide these batteries for free which is something you should look into if you are going to need a lot of them. Storing electricity is only part of the process; you must convert this electricity into AC to be used at home or in your garage. If you already have a modified sine wave or true sine wave power inverter, you can use this energy. To get 60 MHz electricity, like out of your outlet, you must purchase or have a true sine wave inverter. Only a true sine wave inverter, not a modified sine wave device, will convert the energy properly, but at a higher price.
The only connections that you will need will be for the battery. This way, power will only be able to flow from the solar cells to the batteries and not the other way around. Sometime during the night you could be wasting power. However, for those who choose to use a charge controller this step is not necessary. While you will need to have some DIY skills to be able to make your own solar panels, it isn’t as difficult as many people think. It’s really no harder than knowing what materials you’ll need, obtaining them before you begin and having the patience to complete the task.
