Building Your Own Solar Panel Isn’t Nearly As Hard As You Might Think
The sun is amazing, especially considering that the energy it puts out is so powerful that the amount our planet absorbs in one hour is enough to cover the energy needs of our planet for one year. While this form of energy arrives as heat and light, that doesn’t mean it can’t be converted into a usable form of energy. By installing solar panels in your home, you can have a very practical and inexpensive form of energy that has many uses.
A major worry for many households is the cost of the solar panels which can and probably has dissuaded many from making the switch. But, there is good news, solar panels are probably not as expensive as you might think, in fact you can even make your own solar panels at home with a little help from the internet and some basic household tools. Perhaps one of the easiest solar panel designs to create is done with a wood container, a saw, a drill and a screwdriver. You may also need some silicone caulking and/or wood glue to assemble the wooden container and attach the solar cells. In order to create a solar panel at home you will need to have solar cells to mount into your wooden (or other) type of box in a collection format. If you are worried that you might not find these cells very easy take a look online at places like Ebay. Just because you find them cheap doesn’t always mean you should invest in them. Your overall energy output depends heavily on the quality of your cells so be sure you are getting a good quality product. Ultimately, you want to have a solar cell that is graded above “grade B” level without ever going below that standard. One solar panel is made up of an average of 36 solar cells, each solar cell can produce 100 watts of power. For an average cost of $2 each these cells can be called rather inexpensive compared to what you might have been thinking.
The only connections that you will need will be for the battery. Power will flow from the solar cells to the batteries. Sometime during the night you could be wasting power. This step may not be necessary if you choose to use a charge controller. Although it does require a small amount of do it yourself know how, building your own solar panel really isn’t that hard after all. All you really need is patience, materials and desire to tackle the task.
