How to Build Your Own Solar Panel
There are multiple benefits of solar panels simply due to the fact that they make clean energy from the natural elements on our planet. The fact that they are a renewable energy source, meaning that it isn’t a resource that will run out, is an added bonus. You may have been wondering whether or not you should get solar panels installed, in which case I recommend you continue to read to learn more about this wonderful energy source.
Many people are worried about the cost of solar panels, which is why they haven’t yet made the switch from standard electricity providers to this form of clean energy. But, there is good news, solar panels are probably not as expensive as you might think, in fact you can even make your own solar panels at home with a little help from the internet and some basic household tools. It may surprise you to find that many of the products you already have in your home can be used to create a simple solar panel design, for instance, you probably own a saw, drill, screwdriver and a wooden container of some sort. You may want to consider having wood glue and silicone caulking handy in order to be able to assemble your wooden box and attach your solar panel cells to it.
Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. Wood will expand and shrink with the changes in the weather. It’s imperative that you avoid damaging cells by using a single dot of this caulk to allow wood to shift. After you have pushed the wires through the hole that you drilled make sure that you have filled it with caulk. Decide where you want to put your plexiglass and then screw it all together.
Another aspect of solar panels are the charge controllers that are in between the panel itself and the storage battery. To maintain your battery life over time, and to properly charge them each and every day, you need to use charge controllers. A charge controller will also ensure that no power flows out of the batteries and back into the solar panel, which would be a waste. They also act like a resistor not allowing the batteries to be overcharged. You must place solar panels on top of your building or home so that they can receive sunlight and power your home at the same time. You can also heat your home using the electricity from the solar panels which can save you money every winter.
