Read this article to learn how to build your own solar panel.
Solar energy is the future of energy as we know it. Many experts agree that there is no end in sight, at least not any time soon, for the sustainability of solar energy as a “green” energy source that won’t have a negative impact on our environment. Another factor to consider is the fact that, aside from initial setup and installation, solar energy is free which will hold some appeal to homeowners.
Many people think that building your own solar panels at home is difficult. Do It Yourself skills are important if you are looking to build your own solar panel. To build your own solar panels you will need just a few basic items. You’ll also need some caulk to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. To make your life easier when you are doing the wiring you need to try and find solar panels that already have the tabs on them. If you can not find solar panels with tabs you will have to solder on the tabs before you glue them in place.
Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. Only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell because wood tends to expand and shrink with the weather. It’s imperative that you avoid damaging cells by using a single dot of this caulk to allow wood to shift. After you have pushed the wires through the hole that you drilled make sure that you have filled it with caulk. Your solar panel is almost complete, just mount your plexiglass with screws.
Since solar panels are essentially a set of solar cells within a container, you will need to make a container if you are taking the DIY route with your solar panels. Because wood is often easier to work with it is often the material of choice when building solar panels. You can use whatever type of wood you like but plywood is a great option for the back. You will also need to put some wood inside the box to hold the cells and plexiglass to cover the box. This type of opaque covering protects the cells from damage due to the elements while still allowing necessary sunlight to reach each cell. You’ll want to remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled through as well. It is then necessary to connect the cells to one another via soldering.
Solar panel systems are most certainly the future of energy production for people’s homes, not just for the reason that they’re cost-effective, but also because they have a positive impact on the environment. So the sooner you install them, the more money you’ll save.
