Building your own solar panel can be easy.
More and more people are turning to solar energy in an effort to cut costs, especially with the current state of the global economy. However, some are worried that the cost of installing solar panels will be too high, even though it is an expense that would quickly be offset by savings made on the electricity bill. The good news is that you can actually build your own solar panels for half the price. There are many important aspects that you will need to know about building your own solar panels.
Many people are worried about the cost of solar panels, which is why they haven’t yet made the switch from standard electricity providers to this form of clean energy. But, there is good news, solar panels are probably not as expensive as you might think, in fact you can even make your own solar panels at home with a little help from the internet and some basic household tools. The simplest type of solar panel to create can be made using items you may already own such as a screwdriver, saw, drill and a wooden container. Don’t overlook the likelihood of needing wood glue or other adhesives such as silicone caulk available to aide in box assembly and solar panel attachment.
The plexiglass is for protection of your cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. Just a dot of silicone caulk in the center of the cell will keep the cells steady when the wood expands or shrinks. To prevent damage to your solar cell, use just a single dot of caulk which will allow the wood to shift. Once the caulk has set, all you need to do is to drill a hole in the box for the wires but make sure to fill it with caulk after you have pushed the wires through to make sure that no moisture gets in. Your solar panel is almost complete, just mount your plexiglass with screws.
Batteries will need to be connected and you may want to solder a diode first. Charge your batteries using your solar panels. To avoid wasting energy make sure that your solar panels are sending power to your batteries and not the other way around. However, for those who choose to use a charge controller this step is not necessary.
Solar panels give you a cheap power alternative that can serve you well in difficult economic times and ever rising utility costs. In this day and age, you can feel safer knowing that your energy needs don’t depend on things like oil, gas or coal being affordable or even available at all.
