How to Build Your Own Solar Panel
While we’re accustomed to many types of energy and technology, the only power source we couldn’t live without is the sun. We obviously depend on the sun to heat our planet, but there are actually many diverse ways this energy can be harnessed for our daily use. You can easily meet most of your energy needs by installing a solar panel system in your home.
If you’re using solar panels for your power you won’t need to rely on the public electric grid, which is probably the biggest benefit of using a solar panel system. This means that you can greatly cut down your electricity bills and maybe even slash them dramatically. Also, you can actually earn money because in many areas the government will buy any surplus energy you create. However, even if this is not the case where you live, the savings you can make by installing a solar panel system are enormous.
Your climate and how much sunlight you receive are important factors to consider before getting solar panels. This is because there are two types of solar panels, namely concentrating solar collectors and non-concentrating collectors.
If you get enough sunlight all year, a concentrating solar collector would be ideal for you, as these can make good use of direct sunlight. If, however, you only get a limited amount of sunlight, a non-concentrating solar collector would be a better choice, as these can also absorb reflected sunlight. You can always consult with an expert if you don’t know which type of solar panel would be appropriate for you.
It is first necessary to realize that you will need a container in which to place your solar cells in order to create your own solar panels with the do it yourself method. Containers can be made out of a wide range of materials but the one that most people prefer is wood because it is easier to work with. Plywood is a great option to use for the back, but you can use any type of wood you have available. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. This plexiglass covering serves two purposes, to protect the cells from the elements and also to allow sunlight to reach the cells too. You’ll need to have a hole in the box that will make it possible for you to get the wires pulled outside the box too. Now that you have the cells mounted it becomes necessary to connect each to the next using a bit of solder.
The tools will require some skill, but it is something that anyone can do. Using your home built solar panels you could be powering your entire home with sunlight.
