Don’t Think Building Your Own Solar Panel Is Too Difficult For You
Solar panels have many advantages, especially since they provide clean energy by harnessing the natural elements of the planet. Additionally, they’re a source of energy that will never run out, which is called a renewable energy source. So if you have been pondering over whether to install solar panels or not you should continue reading this article to find out more.
If you want to see how easy it is to build your own solar panels at home, read this article. Of course, you do need to have some DIY skills, in that you need to be handy with a soldering iron and to be able to handle a saw, but other than that you can have a solar panel ready in no time at all. You can find solar cells online, and you will need wood to build a container and plexiglass for the cover. You’ll also need some caulk to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. Pre-tabbed solar cells will make the wiring easier. Make sure that you get solar panels with tabs, otherwise you will have to solder on tabs before you glue them in place.
Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. To attach the cells to the box, you will need to glue some strips of wood inside the box, also known as substrate, onto which you will glue the solar cells. Just a dot of silicone caulk in the center of the cell will keep the cells steady when the wood expands or shrinks. It’s imperative that you avoid damaging cells by using a single dot of this caulk to allow wood to shift. Drill a hole in the box to feed your wires through, but make sure that you fill it with caulk when you are done to prevent moisture from getting to your solar cells. Your solar panel is almost complete, just mount your plexiglass with screws.
In terms of connections, if you are going to be connecting your solar panel to batteries, you might want to solder on a diode first. Using batteries will allow the solar cells to power the batteries and not the other way around. Lastly make sure that you are not wasting power. This is not a necessary step when you choose to use a charge controller instead.
Without a doubt, solar panels are definitely the future for producing energy in the home, not just because they’re cost-effective but they’re also good for the environment. So by installing them sooner rather than later you can save more money on your electricity bills.
