The Upside of Using Solar Panels

The future of solar energy is certain to be long and adventurous. Solar energy is “green” meaning it leaves no negative impact on the environment not to mention it is likely to be around for a couple billion more years, or so the experts say. Homeowner’s will consider this energy source seriously once they realize the cost of energy is reduced to zero after the initial installation and setup costs are incurred making it a viable source of heat and energy needs for an average household.

First of all, solar panels are receptacles for solar cells that you will use. The conversion of simple sunlight by the solar cells is how they create electricity. The creation of electricity using sunlight happens when the rays of the sun hit the silicone solar cells making electricity manifest. It takes a great number of solar cells to create a solar panel that can generate enough electricity that is meaningful. You can actually make your own solar panel at home and it doesn’t really cost much, especially since then you will be able to enjoy the benefits of free electricity. DIY experts will probably have no problem at all creating their very own solar panels at home as long as you have a soldering iron. A solar panel is connected to batteries and most of them use the regular 12 volt batteries that are used in cars. Sealed lead acid batteries seem to be the most popular type because they are inexpensive, safe and robust. In fact, with a little research you can find these batteries very cheaply or even for free. This electricity must be converted into alternating current, which means you will need a power inverter to be able to use what you have stored. You need to get one of the following power inverters which includes modified and true sine wave devices. A true sine wave inverter is the only device that will give you the same AC electricity that comes out of your sockets. By spending a few extra dollars on the right inverter, you will be able to use your electricity in your home.

If you are doing all of this yourself, it’s important to remember that a solar panel is essentially a set of solar cells grouped within a container, which you will need to create for your solar panels. Because it is easer to work with than many of the other options for container creation, wood is the most obvious and widely used material. Plywood is a great option to use for the back, but you can use any type of wood you have available. Cover the container with plexiglass, you may also want to put a bit of wood inside the box to hold the cells in place. This type of opaque covering protects the cells from damage due to the elements while still allowing necessary sunlight to reach each cell. You’ll need to have a hole in the box that will make it possible for you to get the wires pulled outside the box too. Now that you have the cells mounted it becomes necessary to connect each to the next using a bit of solder. While you will need to have some DIY skills to be able to make your own solar panels, it isn’t as difficult as many people think. You just need a bit of patience and make sure you have all the materials you need before you start.
