Building Your Own Solar Panel Isn’t Nearly As Hard As You Might Think

In the future solar energy will be the main source our consumable energy. Many experts agree that there is no end in sight, at least not any time soon, for the sustainability of solar energy as a “green” energy source that won’t have a negative impact on our environment. Another factor to consider is the fact that, aside from initial setup and installation, solar energy is free which will hold some appeal to homeowners.

Building your own solar panels at home isn’t as difficult as many people think. You should know how to use a soldering iron and handle a saw, if you can do this your solar panels will be ready in no time. You can find solar cells online, and you will need wood to build a container and plexiglass for the cover. You will need to use silicon caulk or wood glue of some type to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. To make your life easier when you are doing the wiring you need to try and find solar panels that already have the tabs on them. If you can not find solar panels with tabs you will have to solder on the tabs before you glue them in place.

This plexiglass cover is used to protect the cells from the elements as well as provide an inlet for ample sunlight for charging the cells. You will glue your solar cells to the substrate, which are the strips of wood that you glue to the inside of your box. Only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell because wood tends to expand and shrink with the weather. Using a single dot of caulk will allow the wood to shift without damaging your solar cells. After you have pushed the wires through the hole that you drilled make sure that you have filled it with caulk. Lastly, screw your plexiglass on.

Moving on, you will need to add to your solar panel and battery a little device called a charge controller for the following reasons. To maintain your battery life over time, and to properly charge them each and every day, you need to use charge controllers. A charge controller will also ensure that no power flows out of the batteries and back into the solar panel, which would be a waste. This will help you prevent overcharging which can cause damage to your batteries over time.

When you look at economic conditions and how expensive oil and other traditional energy sources are getting, doesn’t it makes sense to seek alternatives? Solar power can free you from depending on external conditions for your power needs, so that no matter what happens you’ll have a cost free way to get energy.
