It’s Not Difficult to Install Solar Panels
Undoubtedly, solar energy is the future. Solar energy is “green” meaning it leaves no negative impact on the environment not to mention it is likely to be around for a couple billion more years, or so the experts say. Homeowner’s will consider this energy source seriously once they realize the cost of energy is reduced to zero after the initial installation and setup costs are incurred making it a viable source of heat and energy needs for an average household.
A major worry for many households is the cost of the solar panels which can and probably has dissuaded many from making the switch. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. The simplest type of solar panel to create can be made using items you may already own such as a screwdriver, saw, drill and a wooden container. You may also need some silicone caulking and/or wood glue to assemble the wooden container and attach the solar cells.
Your simple box with a plexiglass front will allow sunlight in but will ensure the protection of the cells. Glue is used to attach the cells to the box, and you will need to glue some wood strips inside the box. You should only use a dot of caulk in the center of the cell. It’s imperative that you avoid damaging cells by using a single dot of this caulk to allow wood to shift. After the caulk has set, you will need to drill a hole in the box for the wires. Then, screw your Plexiglas on and mount it where you want.
A nifty device that sits between the battery and the solar panel is called the charge controller. These devices will prevent overcharging the batteries and ensuring the voltage levels are correct. A charge controller will also ensure that no power flows out of the batteries and back into the solar panel, which would be a waste. Likewise, if the batteries are fully charged, it will stop allowing power to flow into them to avoid damage. You will indeed need to have some do it yourself know how to complete this task but it’s not nearly as difficult as most people thought. If you are serious about saving money, this is a project easy enough for even the novice to complete once the materials are rounded up and the patience to succeed is wrangled into production.
