What to Consider When Installing Solar Panels
Solar panels offer many benefits because they create clean energy by using the natural elements of our planet. Additionally, they’re a source of energy that will never run out, which is called a renewable energy source. If you’ve contemplated installing solar panels but you’re still undecided it would be a good idea to read on to find out more about this great source of energy.
Many people think that building your own solar panels at home is difficult. Of course, you do need to have some DIY skills, in that you need to be handy with a soldering iron and to be able to handle a saw, but other than that you can have a solar panel ready in no time at all. You can find solar cells online, and you will need wood to build a container and plexiglass for the cover. You will need to use silicon caulk or wood glue of some type to attach the solar cells to the wooden container. To make your life easier when you are doing the wiring you need to try and find solar panels that already have the tabs on them. Before you glue your solar panels in place you will have to solder tab on, if you are unable to find panels that have the tabs on them.
The container for your solar panel is simply a box with a Plexiglas front, which will allow sunlight to flow in but will ensure that the cells are protected. The substrate is what you will use to glue your solar cells to. Just a dot of silicone caulk in the center of the cell will keep the cells steady when the wood expands or shrinks. To prevent damage to your solar cell, use just a single dot of caulk which will allow the wood to shift. After the caulk has set, you will need to drill a hole in the box for the wires. Then, screw your Plexiglas on and mount it where you want.
Moving on, you will need to add to your solar panel and battery a little device called a charge controller for the following reasons. These devices will prevent overcharging the batteries and ensuring the voltage levels are correct. To make sure that the electricity does not flow backwards, these units are also necessary. They also act like a resistor not allowing the batteries to be overcharged.
As you can see, building a solar panel requires a bit of skill with tools but it is something anyone can do. Using your home built solar panels you could be powering your entire home with sunlight.
