Make Your Home Energy Efficient With Solar Panels
There are a variety of positives when it comes to solar panels, especially since they harness the natural elements on earth to provide us with green energy. In addition to this, they are a renewable energy source (which means it’s a resource that’ll never run out) which is an added bonus. If you’ve contemplated installing solar panels but you’re still undecided it would be a good idea to read on to find out more about this great source of energy.
Many people are worried about the cost of solar panels, which is why they haven’t yet made the switch from standard electricity providers to this form of clean energy. But, there is good news, solar panels are probably not as expensive as you might think, in fact you can even make your own solar panels at home with a little help from the internet and some basic household tools. Perhaps one of the easiest solar panel designs to create is done with a wood container, a saw, a drill and a screwdriver. Don’t overlook the likelihood of needing wood glue or other adhesives such as silicone caulk available to aide in box assembly and solar panel attachment. In order to create a solar panel at home you will need to have solar cells to mount into your wooden (or other) type of box in a collection format. If you are worried that you might not find these cells very easy take a look online at places like Ebay. Just because you find them cheap doesn’t always mean you should invest in them. Your overall energy output depends heavily on the quality of your cells so be sure you are getting a good quality product. If the solar cells you find on Ebay are rated at or below grade “B” avoid them. You can usually expect to generate 100 watts of power from every 100 solar cells and there are somewhere around 36 of them in one solar panel. Each solar cell costs about $2 so you won’t go broke on them.
You will need a container to put the series of solar cells that will make up your solar panel into if you are taking the do it yourself route. Because it is easer to work with than many of the other options for container creation, wood is the most obvious and widely used material. For the back of the solar panel, plywood is a great choice although there are many other types of wood that are also acceptable. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. That plexiglass cover will allow sunlight to be absorbed by the cells while remaining protected from the elements. It’s important that you remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled out of. You can use solder to connect all of these cells together once you’ve mounted the solar cells. Do it yourself skills are necessary as with any project but overall this is a simple task to tackle for many of us. This is a task that only requires patience, materials and perseverance to succeed in making your own solar panel to save energy.
