How to Build Your Own Solar Panel
Solar panels have many advantages, especially since they provide clean energy by harnessing the natural elements of the planet. In addition to this, they are a renewable energy source (which means it’s a resource that’ll never run out) which is an added bonus. You may have been wondering whether or not you should get solar panels installed, in which case I recommend you continue to read to learn more about this wonderful energy source.
Most people worry about the initially high cost of the solar panels, which is the number one reason for not making the switch. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. The simplest type of solar panel to create can be made using items you may already own such as a screwdriver, saw, drill and a wooden container. In order for you to attach the solar cells and put the box together it may be necessary to have some wood glue and silicone caulk on hand.
If you want to install solar panels, you first have to calculate how many hours of sunlight you get on average. You have to choose between two kinds of solar panels: concentrating and non-concentrating solar collectors.
Concentrating solar collectors are panel that need to be positioned in such a way that they get the maximum possible amount of direct sunlight, meaning that they are the best option for areas that get a lot of sunlight year round. Not everyone lives in a place that gets a lot of direct sunlight, though, and for anyone in this category a non-concentrating solar collector, which can absorb sunlight from reflection as well as directly, is the perfect choice. There are many people or companies who could tell you, based on your location, which type of solar panel is best for you; even if you want to install them yourself, you could call someone to get this information.
Since solar panels are essentially a set of solar cells within a container, you will need to make a container if you are taking the DIY route with your solar panels. Wood is the most widely used material for these containers although there are a wide range of other materials that can also be used. You can use whatever wood type suits your fancy but we can recommend the usage of plywood. You will then need to have some sort of stabilization inside the box (usually wood as well) and a top made of plexiglass to cover the container. This type of opaque covering protects the cells from damage due to the elements while still allowing necessary sunlight to reach each cell. You will also need a whole in the bottom of the box that will allow you to pull the wires out of the box. It is then necessary to connect the cells to one another via soldering.
Because solar panel systems are good for the environment and cost-effective they will most certainly be the future of energy production in the home. Therefore getting them installed sooner rather than later will enable you to save more money.
