What to Consider When Installing Solar Panels
Undoubtedly, solar energy is the future. Solar energy is “green” meaning it leaves no negative impact on the environment not to mention it is likely to be around for a couple billion more years, or so the experts say. Homeowner’s will consider this energy source seriously once they realize the cost of energy is reduced to zero after the initial installation and setup costs are incurred making it a viable source of heat and energy needs for an average household.
Many people are worried about the cost of solar panels, which is why they haven’t yet made the switch from standard electricity providers to this form of clean energy. However, the good news is that it probably isn’t as expensive as you think, and you can actually build your own solar panels at home with some basic tools and parts that are all available via the internet. It may surprise you to find that many of the products you already have in your home can be used to create a simple solar panel design, for instance, you probably own a saw, drill, screwdriver and a wooden container of some sort. In order for you to attach the solar cells and put the box together it may be necessary to have some wood glue and silicone caulk on hand. An extra 12 V car battery, and some proper wiring, is necessary to hook up to your solar panels to store the energy. Probably the safest route to go is to use a lead acid battery which can easily store the charge. Many places will offer great deals on these types of batteries along with coupons at your local store. Storing electricity is only part of the process; you must convert this electricity into AC to be used at home or in your garage. To do this, you need to purchase sine wave converters to get the job done. More than likely, you will want to use your appliances at home which requires purchasing a true sine wave inverter to convert electricity. Of course, these models are more expensive than their modified counterparts, are well worth the cost.
If you are doing all of this yourself, it’s important to remember that a solar panel is essentially a set of solar cells grouped within a container, which you will need to create for your solar panels. Solar panels containers can be made of any number of materials although the ease of workmanship makes wood the obvious choice for such a project. Your local hardware and lumber store can direct you to many types of woods available although the final choice is yours It is recommended that you have some wood inside the box to separate the cells and hold them upright as well as a covering of plexiglass over the top too. Since sunlight needs to get into each cell, plexiglass coverings are perfect ways to protect the cells from the elements and still allow full sun exposure to the cells. You’ll want to remember to drill a whole for the wires to be pulled through as well. Once you mount the solar cells, you will need to do a bit of soldering to connect the cells to each other.
As you can see, building a solar panel requires a bit of skill with tools but it is something anyone can do. In no time at all you can have your own solar panel up and running.
