Building Your Own Solar Panel Is Easier Than You Think
More and more people are turning to solar energy in an effort to cut costs, especially with the current state of the global economy. Installing solar panels will be high, but the expense will quickly be off set by the amount you will be saving on your electric bill. Building your own solar panels for half the price is good news. Use this article as a guide to building your own solar panels.
You can get hot water, power all of your appliances and more simply by installing a solar panel on your roof. Your utility bills can be reduced or even eliminated by doing this.
Depending on where you live, you can probably get a rebate or tax break when you install solar panels. Additionally, the increase in popularity of solar panels and advancements in technology have led to these systems becoming more affordable. One of the best things about solar panels is that you can make them even more economical by installing them yourself, which will then free you from being dependent on the power companies. In order to create a solar panel at home you will need to have solar cells to mount into your wooden (or other) type of box in a collection format. Many people think it’s too hard to find solar cells but the reality is you can easily find them on Ebay. However, don’t make the mistake of buying cells simply because they are cheap. Your overall energy output depends heavily on the quality of your cells so be sure you are getting a good quality product. Ultimately, you want to have a solar cell that is graded above “grade B” level without ever going below that standard. You can expect about 100 solar cells to produce approximately 100 watts of power and the average solar panel has 36 of these. You may be surprised to find out that these cells aren’t as expensive as you might have thought, in fact only about $2 each.
Since solar panels are essentially a set of solar cells within a container, you will need to make a container if you are taking the DIY route with your solar panels. Wood is the most widely used material for these containers although there are a wide range of other materials that can also be used. You can use whatever wood type suits your fancy but we can recommend the usage of plywood. You will also need to put some wood inside the box to hold the cells and plexiglass to cover the box. Since sunlight needs to get into each cell, plexiglass coverings are perfect ways to protect the cells from the elements and still allow full sun exposure to the cells. Also, don’t forget to drill a hole in the box so you can pull the wires out. Once you mount the solar cells, you will need to do a bit of soldering to connect the cells to each other. Do it yourself skills are necessary as with any project but overall this is a simple task to tackle for many of us. All you really need is patience, materials and desire to tackle the task.
